Around the River at Aswan

ASWAN - The present town of Aswan is built on the site of the old market of the city of Abu. It is situated on the east bank at the cateracts just north of the famous Aswan dam. There are in fact two dams - the old one built by the British, the new one by the Russians between 1960 and 1964. Dominating the west bank is the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan which overlooks the very picturesque islands and river channels which are navigated by numerous feluccas. In the close desert on the west bank are the ruins of the monastry of St. Simeon, easly reached by a short camel ride.
